Why did Ahab have 400 prophets and were they prophets of God? PDF | Print | E-mail

Hi Isaac, shalom.

How come Ahab had 400 prophets? Were they his prophets or prophets of God?
One of them said to Micah "why would the spirit of God have left him?"
That indicates that they were from Adonai?

Shalom,

Rabbi Isaac Levy responds...

When men walk in disobedience to God, He will not speak to them and those
men will have no visions, dreams, or divine provisions. So men surround themselves with
"Yes" men who are afraid to tell the truth for fear of consequences.
So they tell the king what he wants to hear. Israel and Ahab were not the only
ones to do this, all kings down history have surrounded themselves with witches,
 soothesayers, false prophets, etc.

These prophets were at one time serving God, but turned away for earthly, temporary
 benefits.
